Ahead of February, 2025 Local Government Electionin Osun State , A Network of Non-Governmental Organisations in Osun State NETNOS, has urged stakeholders on implementation of effective electoral
reform to ensure free, fair and credible election.

The President of the network, Comrade Michael Olusesi Ebofin was speaking at a Pre-election activities press conference on the preparedness of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission OSIEC held in Osogbo, Osun State Capital.

He said that local government elections are generally seen as less significant compared to
national polls, leading to lower media attention and public engagement.

"It is worthy to note that the current administration of Osun State Independent Electoral
Commission OSSIEC is showcasing a great level of improvement in operations as an unbiased electoral umpire in Nigeria based on the aforementioned structures and provisions to ensure a credible election come 22nd of February, 2025".

"Network of Non-Governmental Organisations in Osun State NETNOS, as a civil society coalition without any partisan political affiliation or allegiance, but with strong partisanship on the side of the citizens. As an umbrella body for over ninety (90) organizations working
of different thematic areas in Osun state, Nigeria".

"Our network has been observing the Pre-Election activities on the state of preparedness of OSSIEC and NETNOS towards 2025 Local Government election in Osun state".

"We believe the prompt release of election timetable provides ample opportunity for key stakeholders to
prepare adequately for the success of the process".

"Local government elections in Nigeria serve as the foundation of democracy, bringing governance closer to the people. These elections determine the leadership of local councils, which are responsible for providing basic services, implementing development projects, and addressing community-specific issues".

"The effectiveness of local governance hinges on the outcomes of these elections, making them a crucial element of the democratic process. The creation of Osun State on 27th August, 1991 under military regime ushered-in the
appointment of Local Government Administrators in 1992. After which Osun State has been conducting Local Government elections till date".
State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) were established by the respective State Houses of Assembly in each state of the federation through section 197 of the 1999
Constitution to conduct elections to local government councils".

"Osun State like others in Nigeria has been conducting elections to Local Governments, while the credibility could be analyzed based on the anchor administration (incumbent ruling parties).

"Osun State Independent Commission OSSIEC as the electoral umpire in the state is expected to conduct free, fair, credible, inclusive and conclusive election in collaboration with relevant stakeholders".

"We are calling on security agencies to be deployed for the election to respect and ensure protection for vulnerable voters, especially the aged, women and persons with disabilities PwDs as well as the right to freedom of movement on Election day.
