A bill to legally recognize Islamic and traditional marriages in Osun has passed its second reading. 

The bill authored by the Lawmaker representing Osogbo State Constituency,Honourable Rasheed Bamidele Lawal christened Osun State Islamic and traditional Marriages,aims to safeguard and legitimize these marriages.

The proposed law offers several benefits,including:Increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) through registration,Standardized Marriage Licenses, ensuring proper documentation,Simplified International Travel Documents for couples,Protection of rights for couples and their families, ensuring access to legal recourse and social benefits.


To legitimize Islamic and Traditional Marriages to be in tandem with Court marriage and be recognized all over the world, Osun State House of Assembly on Tuesday debated on Osun State Islamic and Traditional Marriages Registration Bill 2024.

While presenting its policy thrust,the drafter of the bill,Hon Bamidele Lawal representing Osogbo State Constituency stated that the bill seeks to improve the social life of people of the state.

He said that Osun State Islamic and Traditional Marriages Registration Bill 2024 will ensure proper Certification, Registration
Issuance of licens for both Islamic and Traditional Marriages.

Other advantages of the bill will
ensure proper documentation of Islamic and Traditional Organizations in the state,
Generate revenue for the state by the payment of fees for the issuance of certificates, thereby enhancing Internally Generated Revenue, IGR of the state and also provide easy process of International for foreign trips.

The merits of the bill will also be
Responsible to the President of the Customary Court of Appeal and 
responsible for recommending application forms for the issuance of certificates.

In their various submissions, Hon Tajudeen Adeyemi, Hon Sikiru Bajepade, Hon Taofeeq Olayiwola, Hon Kofoworola Adewumi, Hon Abiola Awoyeye, Hon Laide Ajibola and Hon Lawrence Adeoti said the bill is timely, and an appropriate law. They lawmakers said the bill deserves quick attention. 

To be able to balance the Bill, Hon Abiola Awoyeye and Hon Lawrence Adeoti were of the opinion that the Bill will pass through Public Hearing on the said Bill wherby notable Islamic Women, Traditionalist and others would
be able to contribute and make their submissions before the Bill could be passed into law.

Having listened to presentation of the policy thrust and submissions from colleagues, the speaker, Rt Hon Adewale Egbedun aligned himself with them and the bill later scaled second reading as moved by the Majority Leader and seconded by Hon Tajudeen Adeyemi.
