Ondo residents commend EU for support to social protection accessibility, call for fairness in beneficiary’s selection
A prominent traditional ruler in Ondo, His Royal Majesty Oba Owoseni Alopos Korolo of Kelema Community in Igbokoda, Ilaje has commended European Union and consortium of the Act Naija! Action- Bread for the World, African Network for Environment and Economic Justice and New Initiative For Social Development for creating a right home for the people of community in accessing social protection programmes of the Federal and the State Governments through Community outreach and other sensitization initiatives.
The monarch stated this at the Community Outreach organized by the New Initiative For Social Development (NISD) gearing towards public enlightenment on social protection interventions in the State.
According to him “I am extremely happy that this kind of Initiative is coming to our community at this time, because we have never experienced such an impactful engagement as this in a long while. Your coming, I must confess, it is timely and highly beneficial,” he said.
He assured the European Union and other consortium under Act Naija! Project of full support and cooperation of the community members, added that he would do everything within his power to ensure the residents maximize the knowledge gained on social protection, while charging the participants to spread the information learned to neighbors and families in order to deepen awareness on Social Protection programs in Kelema Igbokoda.
The outreach which gave room for the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) managing social protection programmes in the state to sensitize the participants and deepened their knowledge on available the social protection programmes in the state and among the MDAs were the Honorable Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget,Olaoluwa represented by Mr. Adegboyega Francis Adewale, Mr. Abiodun Akindureni from State Operations Coordinating Unit. Also present, Community-based Organization representative Mr.Koledoye, Executive Director of A-One Readers Education Foundation as well Mr. Olatunde Akintoye from Cash Transfer Desk Office.
In their various reactions to the state of social protection in the state, Mrs. Ali Emither Malola, a trader, complained that selection of beneficiary communities is often politically influenced and called for fairness and transparency while Mr. Akinfoyewa Levi Omolade questioned why the cash transfer list posted in the community contained names of non-residents while
Chief Mrs. Iretolu Maluku (Erelu of Igbokoda) appreciated the initiative and appealed for more awareness before future programs, transparency during data collection as well as advocating for more school shuttle buses, as only one is functional in the Community.
In their earlier remarks, the Monitoring and Evaluation Manager of NISD, Mr. Olusegun Ojo and state programme Officer, Patrick Adedoyin described Act Naija! as a citizen-centered initiative designed to promote transparency, accountability, and increased citizens’ participation in governance. They further stated that the project focuses on improving access to social protection services through community engagement, advocacy, and capacity building.
“The over goal of the project is to bridge the gap between government social protection interventions and intended beneficiaries by promoting awareness, feedback, and inclusive participation and our aim here today is to increase awareness among community members on existing social protection programs in Ondo State, educate citizens on eligibility requirements and enrollment procedures, provide a platform for direct interaction between MDAs and beneficiaries, to gather feedback and grievances regarding access to social protection services, and encourage community participation in government programs”, they concluded.
The highpoint of the proghramme was Health Sensitization Session such as Body Mass Index (BMI) checks, Random and Fasting Blood Sugar tests, Blood Pressure and Pulse checks, Health talks and Referrals for further medical attention. The health session served as an added incentive that greatly increased turnout and participation.
