By Opeyemi Akinyemi, Ekiti State
The Commissioner of Police overseeing the 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election, CP Abayomi Shogunle, has confirmed the successful delivery of both sensitive and non-sensitive election materials to all 16 Local Government Areas of the state ahead of Saturday's governorship poll.
Speaking during a press conference at the Ekiti State Police Command Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, CP Shogunle disclosed that police personnel escorted and monitored the movement of the election materials to ensure their safe arrival and security across the state.
According to him, the deployment forms part of a comprehensive security arrangement approved by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at maintaining law and order before, during, and after the election.
The police commissioner noted that the operational order is designed to guarantee a peaceful electoral process through the deployment of adequate personnel and security resources to strategic locations across Ekiti State.
He explained that the police have engaged political leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, community heads, and other stakeholders in sensitizing residents on the importance of vigilance and cooperation with security agencies.
"We leveraged the influence of political elites, traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, and other critical stakeholders to disseminate information on the need for vigilance and proactive security measures. As a result, there is a high level of confidence in the security operatives deployed to Ekiti State for the governorship election," he said.
CP Shogunle assured residents that the Nigeria Police Force would remain professional and neutral throughout the electoral process, urging all eligible voters to come out and exercise their civic rights without fear, intimidation, or harassment.
He further stated that security personnel would be deployed across all polling units and collation centres to prevent any form of violence, disruption, or electoral malpractice.
"The Nigeria Police Force will be guided by two important legal documents: the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended), both of which clearly define electoral offences and provide the framework for policing the electoral process," he stated.
The police commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the security agencies to ensuring a free, fair, credible, and peaceful governorship election in Ekiti State.
