There was palpable apprehension at the Osun state University campus in Osogbo, the state capital on Monday night as some persons allegedly identified as military personnel stormed student hostels, inflicting assault and harassment on both male and female students.
Some of the students who narrated their terrifying experience, reported that the perpetrators stormed about 50 hostels, including Cristlag, King's and Queens hostels, unleashing violence and exploiting valuable items.
According to findings, the recruits, said to be from the Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo, had earlier visited areas around the students’ community under the guise of relaxing at entertainment centres.
"They alleged that they were forced to strip and were sexually assaulted, while male students claimed they were beaten, with several alleging that their mobile phones and other valuables were stolen during the incident.
One of the victims said, “It was around midnight when the attackers came. They caused chaos, injured some students, and took away many phones belonging to the students.”
The Vice Chancellor of the University and Leadership of student Association, condemned the incident and called for the intervention of president Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff. The duo were urged to prevail on concerned authority to identify those responsible and ensure that justice is served.
UNIOSUN Students had thronged the streets of Osogbo to protest alleged harassment, sexual assault and stealing of their belongings by the suspected armed recruits.
The unfortunate incident happened three days after passing out parade ceremony was conducted for 90 new recruits on Saturday at the Osogbo Depot Army which is a few meters away from the Osogbo Campus of the affected University.
