Four Suspects Arrested Over Ikire Killings, Police Recover Weapon

The Osun State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with Monday’s attack in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, which resulted in the death of two civilians and left some police officers injured.

The suspects are: Sikiru Ademola Adedeji, 21 years, Olalere Taiwo, 21, Olalere Ademola, 26 and Bankole Abiodun, 20 years.

Parding the suspects at the Police Headquarters in Osogbo, the state capital, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, said the Divisional Police Officer Ikire division and his men responded swiftly to a distress call at Naira & Kobo area of Ikire when a group of about 30 armed hoodlums attacked them.

He stressed that during the attack, one of the hoodlums popularly known as "Ayewo" forcefully snatched an AK-47 rifle from one of the policemen started shooting sporadically which led to the dead of two civilians while the injured officers were taken to hospital for treatment.

According to the CP, preliminary interrogation revealed that the suspects confessed to being political thugs.

Providing details of the attack, CP Zungura said the Divisional Police Officer Ikire division and his men responded swiftly to a distress call at Naira & Kobo area of Ikire when a group of about 30 armed hoodlums attacked them.

“During the attack, the hoodlums forcefully snatched an AK-47 rifle from one of the policemen. One of the hoodlums, popularly known as Ayewo, started shooting sporadically with the snatched rifle,” the CP stated.

He said three policemen and two passers-by were hit during the shooting, adding that the two civilians later died, while the injured officers were taken to hospital for treatment.

“Following credible intelligence and technical analysis, operatives arrested four suspects on Wednesday, August 26, 2026,” the CP noted.

The commissioner said one cutlass-like object was also recovered from them.

According to the Commissioner, preliminary interrogation revealed that the suspects confessed to being political thugs.

He said their faction is headed by one Ayewo, who allegedly fired the snatched AK-47 that hit the victims.

“Investigation is ongoing for the arrest of Ayewo and others at large,” CP Zungura said.

He commended the operatives for their professionalism and use of intelligence in tracking the suspects.

He assured residents that everyone found to have participated in the offence will face the full weight of the law.

The CP also appealed to members of the public to provide credible and timely information to help prevent crime and apprehend criminal elements.

“The Osun State Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace and security across the State,” he added.
