Osun state Embraces Sustainability With 6,000 'Igi Alafia' Tree planting Initiative


 

As part of the effort to combat climate change devastation, Osun state Government in collaboration with spring time development foundation and Green Osun Initiative embraced sustainability with "Igi Alafia Imole"  Tree planting initiative in different areas of the state


During the flag off program of the initiative at Aisu Junction in Ede, the Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Hon. Adejoorin Mayowa explained different benefits the trees will bring to the people of Osun state.

According to him, the trees are going to beatify the roads and the state as a whole, while adding that, trees provide the oxygen human breath in, while human beings breathe out carbonu dioxide which the trees needs to survive.

He, however issued warning to anyone who has the intention of destroying the trees, not to dare, because, there will be environmental marshals everywhere.

He said, The Green Initiative is a worldwide phenomenon that make effect of climate change pronounce in all our surroundings. Mitigating climate change has far-reaching benefits serving as a global solution.

"The trees that we are trying to plant, according to the elementary science, will give out oxygen. The carbon dioxide that we give out as human beings is what the trees need. The oxygen that is given out by the trees is what we, as human beings, and all living things needed.

"That is why the Federal Ministry of Environment has invited us for various stakeholders in Abuja that we should make sure that as much as possible

we should make our environment green. That the green initiative agenda is to sustain the livelihood of every citizens of the country, wherever it may be.

"Apart from that, you can see the beautification aspect of it.The planting of it beautifies the environment. Apart from making the environment green, it makes the environment neater. The concrete wall in the middle of the road is not allowed. When you are talking of environmental sustainability in this country and this part of the state,we have taken it as a matter of duty that all our environment should be green.


While speaking with newsmen, The Chairman of Green Osun Initiative , Dr Deji Adeleke who was represented by his vice, Banji Adesuyi restated that "Igi Alaafia " will bring global warming and also employment opportunities for women in Osun state.

He, also disclosed that 100 women have been employed to take care of the trees for the next one year with a monthly allowance of 30,000.

"We want to make sure that there is global warming, that we de-warm our cities so that it will be healthy for people to live in and it is also as if we are giving back to the soil, where we maintain the natural tree that they grow.

"The sustainability plans we have for this tree is that we are employing 100 women that will wet the tree in the morning and in the evening and we will engaged them for the next one year. We're also placing them on a salary of 30,000 naira every month.

"They will wet the tree in the morning between 6am and 8am and in the evening too they will do that at the same time of the day.

But no that alone, we are employing them for the next one year and we are placing them on a salary of 30,000 every month.

"That we will make sure that the money is ready, is in our account, is not being paid by the state government, is paid by Springtime Development Foundation, Sponsored by the Honorable Chairman of our Organization, Dr. Deji Adeleke.

'All expenses, we were the one who purchased it, we are planting 6,000 trees and all have been purchased and paid for. So we are good to go for the next one year." He explained.
