Niger Tanker Explosion : 73 burnt beyond recognition while 56 are hospitalized

No fewer than 129 persons were involved in the recent petrol tanker explosion at the Dikko junction, Gurara local government area of Niger State, with 73 deaths and 56 hospitalised, including pregnant women, nursing mothers, young and old.

The incident, which involved 2 petrol tankers, occurred along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway and resulted in the burning of several shops along the expressway.

Residents residing along the Dikko junction woke up to a sad morning when a tanker conveying petrol fell while trying to navigate its way on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway.

According to an official of the National Emergency Management Agency, the explosion occurred when the content of the tanker that fell was to be transferred into another one.

This was confirmed by an official of the National Union of Roads Transport Workers at Dikko junction, Abdullahi Spower.

He said a generating set was used to transfer the product, which ignited the explosion.

It is also gathered that several shops along the expressway were gutted and completely burnt down, and bystanders, including pregnant women and nursing mothers, became victims who were burnt to death beyond recognition.

About 56 persons who were rescued and sustained varying degrees of burns were evacuated to 3 separate hospitals within Suleja and Tafa for medical attention.

The Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, who has visited the scene to commiserate with the victims, gave assuring words.

For now, rescue and evacuation are still ongoing while those dead are being moved to a place for mass burial.

This tanker explosion is coming barely 4 months after a similar incident occurred on the Agaie-Lapai road in September 2024, where 59 persons lost their lives, which was attributed to bad roads and overspeeding.

It is also gathered that the same incident also occurred at the Dikko junction in August 2019, where five persons lost their lives while over 10 others sustained injuries.
