BREACH OF FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS: OSSIEC, HASHIM SUE IGP, OSUN CP

The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC, has sued the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and the Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Umar Abba, for the breach of fundamental rights.

Joined in the suit is the OSSIEC Chairman, Barrister Hashim Abioye.

In the suit, the duo are demanding the sum of two billion Naira as damage for harassment, intimidation and detention of some ad-hoc staff of the commission for committing no offence.

Recall that the OSSIEC headquarters had been sealed off by the police a day before the Saturday, February 22, 2025 local government elections in the state which barred residents of the state to have access to the commission.

Abioye said the commission is taking up the case against the Nigerian Police over the overzealousness of their men.

He noted, “A security agency is expected to be neutral and provide necessary security for the people of Nigeria, unfortunately, reverse is the case. Many of our ad-hoc staff have been arrested for committing no offence and up till now, no reason had been given by the police.

“The fact that APC rules at the federal who have control of the security agencies doesn’t give the approval for the police to just misbehave anyhow. This is democracy.”

Recall that the police on Saturday sealed off the premises of OSSIEC and also arrested some of its staff with ballot boxes.

As a result of the arrests, the local government elections were late to start in some polling stations.
