STAY AWAY FROM SECRETARIATS ----ADELEKE WARNS NEWLY ELECTED LG OFFICIALS

The 30 newly elected chairmen in the just concluded local government elections in Osun state have been sworn after been presented with certificates of return by the chairman of Osun Independent Electoral Commission, Hashim Abioye.

The new council chairmen took oath of office and were sworn in alongside their vices at the government house in Osogbo in the presence of governor Ademola Adeleke who was flanked by chairman of PDP governors forum, who is also the governor of Bauchi, Bala Mohammed; governor of Oyo state, Seyi Makinde and former governor of Osun state, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

Affirming the swearing in, governor Ademola Adeleke advised the new council officials to stay away from the councils to prevent clashes, promising to thread the path of rule of law in removing the sacked officials who have occupied the state.

The governor assured president Bola Hammed Tinubu of his commitment to the rule of law in resolving conflic and in any situation as he noted that OSSIEC complied with all extant laws in conducting the local government elections.

At the inauguration ceremony on Sunday, February 23, 2025, Adeleke said an Osun State High Court had declared the chairmanship and councillorship positions vacant before the February 22 elections. However, he accused security agencies of aiding members of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in forcefully occupying the secretariats.

“We will rely on the judiciary to ensure a peaceful removal of those illegally occupying the local government secretariats. Please be patient and always abide by the rule of law,” he told the newly sworn-in officials.

The governor, who described the election as free and fair, said OSIEC followed due process in organizing it despite legal challenges. He commended Osun residents for their massive support and assured them of his administration’s commitment to good governance.

Adeleke also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for resisting alleged attempts to plunge the state into crisis, thanking him for upholding democratic principles.

The swearing-in marks the beginning of a new phase in Osun’s local government administration, even as legal battles over the control of council offices continue.

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde while speaking at the event advocated judicial supremacy over self help and also cautioned against allowing political violence to fester in any part of the country, appealed to the new council bosses to prioritize delivery of dividends of democracy at grassroot levels.
